The Comprehensive Initiative Aims To Raise Industry Standards, Enhance Visitor Experience & Boost Regional Tourism Across The Country.

Kenya will begin a nationwide classification of all tourism facilities in February 2025, marking the first such exercise in six years. The initiative aims to set clear standards for accommodations and services, helping travelers make informed choices. The Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) is currently accrediting around 5,000 beds in the North Rift region as part of this process.

TRA Director General Norbert Talam emphasized the need for operators to meet specified standards, with action planned against those operating illegally. Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) CEO June Chepkemei highlighted the potential of diverse regions like North Rift to attract more visitors and create inclusive tourism opportunities, particularly through cultural, wildlife, and adventure tourism.

The launch event also focused on sustainability efforts, including the ‘One Tourist, One Tree’ initiative to boost Kenya’s biodiversity. Local leaders, like Nandi County Deputy Governor Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot, discussed the job creation potential of tourism, especially for youth, and the economic growth opportunities in the region. The classification effort is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to enhance tourism standards and spread economic benefits across the country.
