WTTC 2026 Showcases A Bold Future For African Tourism
On Monday, 15th June 2026, Radisson Blu Hotel, Nairobi hosted a landmark gathering of tourism and hospitality leaders as the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) convened one of the year’s most influential industry forums. The event welcomed senior government officials, tourism executives, hospitality professionals, investors, policymakers, and private sector stakeholders to discuss the evolving future of travel while celebrating Kenya’s remarkable achievements within the global tourism economy. Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing travel landscape, the forum reinforced Kenya’s growing influence as a destination committed to sustainable tourism, economic resilience, and regional collaboration.

One of the defining moments of the event was the presentation of the WTTC 2026 Economic Impact Research (EIR) by Gloria Guevara, supported by Chase Travel. The report revealed the impressive performance of Kenya’s Travel & Tourism sector, which contributed USD 12.7 billion to the national economy in 2025, representing 9.3% of the country’s GDP, while supporting 1.8 million jobs, equivalent to 8.3% of total employment. These figures underscore tourism’s vital role as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and national prosperity. The findings also highlighted Kenya’s progress in sustainable tourism, noting that nearly 20% of the sector’s energy consumption is sourced from low-carbon energy solutions, reflecting the country’s continued commitment to climate-conscious development.

The forum featured insightful presentations and panel discussions from distinguished industry leaders such as; Hon. Najib Balala, David Gitonga, Alex Avedi, Michael Macharia, and June Chepkemei. Their discussions focused on strengthening public-private partnerships, encouraging investment, enhancing destination competitiveness, embracing innovation, and improving regional connectivity. Collectively, the speakers emphasized the importance of building a tourism industry that is resilient, inclusive, environmentally responsible, and capable of competing successfully on the global stage.

Throughout the day, delegates explored some of the most pressing opportunities and challenges shaping Africa’s tourism sector. Conversations examined strategies for improving travel accessibility, expanding aviation networks, modernizing tourism infrastructure, accelerating digital transformation, developing skilled talent, and diversifying visitor experiences. These priorities were recognized as critical building blocks for positioning Africa as a more competitive destination while unlocking new opportunities for economic development and sustainable growth.

The discussions also painted an optimistic picture of Africa’s tourism outlook, highlighting the continent’s steady rise as an increasingly attractive destination for international travelers and investors alike. Growing visitor arrivals, expanding investment opportunities, and rising employment levels continue to strengthen Africa’s position in the global tourism marketplace. Combined with its extraordinary natural landscapes, vibrant cultures, and expanding tourism offerings, the continent is well positioned to become one of the world’s leading travel destinations in the years ahead.
