KTB Pushes Boundaries With Immersive Outdoor Experiences In The Heart Of Kenya

Nyandarua County is making headlines for all the right reasons as the breathtaking Aberdare Range becomes the latest jewel spotlighted by the Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series. Kicking off the third leg of this epic adventure, the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has turned the spotlight on the Aberdare National Park, positioning it as Kenya’s next premier destination for hiking, trekking, and nature-based tourism.

Hikers embark on the Aberdare’s hiking trails. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) is positioning the Aberdare Range as a flagship destination for hiking and adventure tourism.

From the soaring Ol Donyo Lesatima peak, rising 4,001 meters high, to the mystical Dragon’s Teeth and the lush Ol Kalou Arboretum, this three-day Aberdare Trail Series is more than a hike, it’s a journey through nature, history, and conservation.

“Through this series, we’ve curated experiences that immerse adventurers in the soul of our wilderness,” remarked KTB CEO June Chepkemei, highlighting the park’s unique ecological, cultural, and historical significance.

A Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) warden participates in a tree planting exercise at the Ol Kalou Arboretum ahead of the start of the Aberdares Trail Series.

Day one set the tone with a symbolic tree-planting initiative, emphasizing sustainability. Day two challenged hikers with a scenic climb to the “Crown Jewel of Aberdare,” while day three promises waterfall wonders, from Karuru, Kenya’s tallest, to the legendary Queen’s Cave near Magura Falls, all wrapped in folklore and panoramic views.

This initiative, backed by Athletics Kenya and Kenya Wildlife Service, also taps into the region’s liberation history, reviving sites like the Kimathi Post Office used during the Mau Mau resistance.

Building on the success of previous trail events in Kericho and Bungoma, the Aberdare leg aligns with KTB’s bold vision to attract over 200,000 adventure seekers and 3 million international arrivals by 2025. And it doesn’t stop here, next stops include Mt. Kenya, Mt. Elgon, and the Central Rift.

Ready to hike through history? The Aberdares await, with every step, a story, and every trail, a treasure.
