WTTC 2026 Celebrates Kenya’s Emergence As A Continental Tourism Trailblazer
On Monday, 15th June 2026, an influential assembly of tourism executives, policymakers, industry captains, and development partners gathered at the prestigious Radisson Blu Hotel, Nairobi, for a landmark strategic forum hosted by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). The high-level engagement celebrated Kenya’s remarkable tourism milestones while unveiling fresh insights that continue to position the country as one of Africa’s most dynamic tourism powerhouses. Set against the backdrop of an evolving global travel landscape, the forum highlighted Kenya’s growing significance as a catalyst for sustainable tourism, economic resilience, and regional transformation.

The event unveiled compelling findings from WTTC’s 2026 Economic Impact Research (EIR), presented by Ms. Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, and sponsored by Chase Travel. The report revealed that Kenya’s Travel & Tourism sector generated an impressive USD 12.7 billion for the national economy in 2025, contributing 9.3% of the country’s GDP while supporting 1.8 million jobs, representing 8.3% of total employment. These remarkable figures reaffirmed tourism’s indispensable role as a cornerstone of Kenya’s economic framework and a powerful engine for inclusive growth. Even more significant was Kenya’s outstanding sustainability achievement, with 19.9% of tourism energy sourced from low-carbon solutions—more than three times the global average—firmly establishing the nation among the world’s frontrunners in tourism’s green transition.

The forum also featured inspiring keynote addresses from distinguished industry leaders and policymakers who shared bold perspectives on the future of tourism across Kenya and the African continent. Among the prominent speakers were Hon. Najib Balala, Executive Vice President of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), Mr. David Gitonga, Tourism Secretary of the Republic of Kenya, Mr. Alex Avedi, Vice Chair of the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF), Mr. Michael Macharia, CEO of the Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers (KAHC), and Ms. June Chepkemei, CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB). Their insightful contributions underscored the importance of strategic partnerships, sustainable destination stewardship, investment attraction, innovation, and enhanced regional connectivity in shaping the next chapter of tourism growth.

The discussions further echoed WTTC’s vision that Kenya’s success story is intrinsically linked to Africa’s broader tourism resurgence. With international visitor expenditure surpassing domestic tourism spending and visitor arrivals continuing their upward trajectory, Kenya has strengthened its reputation as one of Africa’s premier gateways. Conversations explored critical priorities including visa facilitation, aviation expansion, infrastructure modernisation, digital travel innovation, workforce development, and tourism diversification—all essential pillars in unlocking the continent’s immense tourism potential.

Beyond Kenya’s achievements, the forum painted an optimistic portrait of Africa’s tourism future. WTTC projections indicated that the sector contributed USD 228 billion to Africa’s economy in 2025 and is expected to grow to USD 241 billion in 2026, positioning the continent among the world’s fastest-growing tourism regions. Rising employment, increasing international arrivals, and expanding investment opportunities continue to reinforce Africa’s standing as a competitive and high-potential destination capable of delivering transformative socio-economic impact over the coming decade.

Among the distinguished dignitaries, tourism leaders, government representatives, and private-sector stakeholders in attendance, a unified vision emerged—one centred on leveraging tourism as a strategic driver of prosperity, sustainability, and regional integration. Capturing every keynote presentation, insightful discussion, and networking engagement was Go Places Media, whose comprehensive live coverage amplified the significance of the forum. Through its storytelling lens, the event showcased not only Kenya’s extraordinary tourism achievements but also Africa’s bold ascent toward becoming a globally competitive tourism powerhouse defined by innovation, sustainability, resilience, and boundless opportunity.
