From Kampala’s Calm Dawn To The Heartbeat Of East Africa’s Wild, The Adventure Takes Off
Our Day 2 began long before sunrise. At exactly 6:00 AM, we checked out of the beautiful Kampala Serena Hotel, ready for one of the most iconic journeys in East Africa — the road trip from Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home of the legendary Mountain Gorillas.
But before the engines started, we had a special moment.
Outside Hotel Africana, we were officially flagged off by Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, the visionary behind the Uganda–Kenya Coast Tourism initiative. His passion, leadership, and belief in a shared East African tourism space made this entire fam trip possible. His words of encouragement energized the entire delegation, setting a hopeful tone for the adventure ahead.

Our convoy — a fleet of 4×4 Land Cruiser Safari Jeeps — stood ready. Professional driver-guides welcomed us with warm smiles, helping us settle into vehicles built for comfort, stability, and long-distance travel. As we pulled out onto the highway, Kampala slowly faded behind us, and the true beauty of Uganda began to unfold.
A Stop at the Equator – Magic at Latitude 0°
Our first major stop was at the famous Uganda Equator, where the northern and southern hemispheres meet.
This spot is more than just a geographical marker — it’s a fun, interactive experience. Delegates took photos, enjoyed the morning breeze, and took part in the famous “water experiment” showing the change of direction between hemispheres.

It’s the kind of place that makes you pause and appreciate the natural wonders of the world.
The Long Journey South – Why It’s Worth It
The road to Bwindi is long — there is no hiding that. But it is also one of the most picturesque journeys in Africa.
We travelled through small towns, lush plantations, tea fields, villages full of smiling children, and open landscapes that stretch endlessly towards the horizon. The scenery changes constantly, each hour revealing something new.
Thanks to our reliable 4×4 Jeeps, the journey was comfortable and enjoyable, even on the more rugged stretches.

Travel Tip:
If you have time, we highly recommend breaking this journey with an overnight stay in Mbarara or Kabale.
But because our itinerary was packed and we had much to experience, our group chose to drive straight through to Bwindi.
Lunch at Agip Motel – A Perfect Midway Break
By midday, we arrived at Agip Motel, a classic stopover for travellers heading to Western Uganda.
The food was fresh, simple, and satisfying — just what we needed before the final stretch into the mountains.

The break also gave us a chance to stretch, refresh, and enjoy conversations with fellow travellers.
Into the Highlands – The Kigezi Hills Welcome Us
Shortly after Mbarara, the landscape transformed.
Rolling hills, terraced slopes, deep valleys, and cool highland air signaled our entrance into the spectacular Kigezi region — often called the Switzerland of Africa.
It is impossible not to fall in love with this part of Uganda.
Every turn offers a postcard-perfect view.

As we approached Bwindi, the air grew cooler, the forests thicker, and a feeling of anticipation filled the vehicle. We were entering one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.
Arrival at Gorilla Safari Lodge – A Warm Welcome in the Mountains
By evening, we finally arrived at Gorilla Safari Lodge, nestled on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The welcome was as warm as the tea they served — friendly smiles, comforting hospitality, and a breathtaking view of the forest.
The lodge is charming, peaceful, and beautifully designed to blend into the environment.
Crackling fireplaces, spacious cottages, and the sound of nature created the perfect setting for rest after a long journey.

Dinner was delicious, hearty, and served in a cosy dining area surrounded by the mountain night. The atmosphere was calm, expectant — because tomorrow was the big day.
Evening Briefing – Preparing for the Gorilla Trek
After dinner, our driver guides gathered us for a mandatory briefing on what to expect during the Gorilla Trek.
The mood in the room was a blend of excitement, nervous laughter, and curiosity. Everyone knew that Day 3 would be life-changing.
The briefing covered:
Trekking difficulty
- Expected distance
- Behavior around gorillas
- Packing essentials
- The importance of porters
- Forest safety
- Meeting point and timing
Every delegate had mixed feelings — excitement, fear, emotion, anticipation — but one thing was clear:
Tomorrow, we were about to meet one of the world’s most extraordinary creatures.
As we returned to our cottages under the cool mountain air, we knew we needed rest.
Day 2 had been long, beautiful, and unforgettable.
But Day 3 would be the day we would remember for the rest of our lives.
