Travel Addict Bwata Featured

Explore Their Ancient Forest Traditions, Unique Survival Skills, And Inspiring Stories Of Hope

The Batwa are one of the few of Africa’s indigenous and oldest tribes. They were the first inhabitants of the equatorial forests, having settled in Uganda, Rwanda, DRC and Burundi. In Uganda, they have settled in the mountainous areas of the South West which borders Rwanda. Over the last decade or so, their homes have been absorbed by the Government’s tourism and wild life conservation. This has left most of them without a home and not all of them have been compensated, although some have been relocated to live in the protected areas of Uganda.

The Batwa lived exclusively as hunters, often gathering wild fruit for their survival. They made homes out of caves, built small grass-thatched huts, and carved their homes in trees as well. The wild was their home as they lived peacefully among both inhabited and uninhabited animals. Today they only Go to the National Park to Guide on this activity.

As you journey through the forest, they take you through their experience of survival in the wilderness. They bring you into their world of life in the forest, through their traditional ways of existence. Your eyes are drawn into how they utilise their natural resources from hunting techniques, to laying traps for animals, lighting a fire with wood and stone, harvesting honey and identifying local herbs as a source of medicine.

Throughout the day their unmatched and captivating storytelling takes you on their journey as the remaining few indigenous inhabitants of the land, is accompanied with their songs and rhythmical tribal dance around the camp fire. Their story of loss is one filled with hope that their people will continue to carry on their legacies.
