New Airport

Revolutionizing Air Travel In Africa With Unmatched Capacity And World-Class Facilities

In a monumental step towards redefining Africa’s aviation landscape, Ethiopian Airlines Group has officially embarked on a transformative journey to develop a Mega Airport City in Abusera, Bishoftu, Ethiopia. This ambitious project, set just 40 kilometers from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, promises to not only elevate Ethiopia as a global aviation hub but also significantly boost the country’s economic growth while embracing environmentally responsible practices.

The project, spearheaded in partnership with the esteemed Dar Al-Handasah Consultants, with architectural input from the world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, is designed to create a state-of-the-art airport city that will serve as a new beacon for African air travel. With an anticipated capacity to handle 110 million passengers annually, the new airport will quadruple the current capacity of Bole International Airport, placing Ethiopia at the forefront of global aviation.

Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, shared the airline’s vision for the Mega Airport City, emphasizing its role in driving innovation and sustainability in the region. He remarked, “The project will not only enhance connectivity but also drive economic growth and prioritize environmentally responsible practices in our country and beyond. With its exceptional capacity and world-class facilities, this new airport promises to elevate African aviation and strengthen partnerships, marking a significant advancement for the region’s air travel infrastructure.”

The Mega Airport City is more than just an airport, it is a symbol of Ethiopia’s commitment to becoming Africa’s most strategic and competitive aviation group. Dar’s Director of Operations in Ethiopia, Tariq Al-Qanni, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are privileged to be collaborating with Ethiopian Airlines on this visionary new airport, which will provide vital global air connectivity, accelerate economic growth in Ethiopia, and elevate Ethiopian Airlines into Africa’s most strategic and most competitive aviation group.”

The first phase of the project, expected to be completed by 2029, will see the airport’s capacity reach 60 million passengers, nearly tripling the number handled by Bole International Airport in 2022. This groundbreaking facility will span over 1.1 million square meters, including state-of-the-art passenger terminals, airline support facilities, and cargo and airport support infrastructure. The design will also integrate elements of Ethiopian heritage, creating a new national symbol characterized by sustainability, resilience, and future-readiness.

Ethiopian Airlines’ unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence is evident in every detail of this Mega Airport City. As the airline continues to soar to new heights, the new airport will not only enhance the travel experience but also solidify Ethiopian Airlines’ position as the airline of choice for discerning travellers seeking unparalleled service and connectivity.

For those who demand the best in air travel, Ethiopian Airlines is not just a carrier; it’s a gateway to a world of exceptional experiences. With the upcoming Mega Airport City, Ethiopian Airlines is set to deliver an unparalleled level of service and connectivity, making it the preferred choice for travellers worldwide.
