For nearly seven decades, Aga Khan IV served as the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community, a branch of Islam known for its emphasis on education, social justice, and ethical leadership. The Ismaili Muslims, spread across the globe, look to the Aga Khan for guidance not only in faith but also in advancing the quality of life for people of all backgrounds.
One of his greatest legacies is the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), one of the world’s largest private development organizations. With initiatives spanning over 30 countries, AKDN has played a crucial role in healthcare, education, economic development, and cultural preservation, focusing on sustainable solutions that empower communities. From building hospitals and universities to restoring historic sites and improving infrastructure, his impact is undeniable.
His Highness championed the idea that progress should be measured not by material wealth alone but by the ability to create a more just, inclusive, and compassionate world. His work was a testament to the power of leadership rooted in service, inspiring countless individuals, both within and beyond the Ismaili community, to strive for a better future.
