Ingredients

For the Meat Filling:

  • 500g minced beef or lamb
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp chili flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

For the Bread:

  • 2 Egyptian pita breads (or any thick flatbread)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or melted butter

For Garnishment and Serving:

  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Fresh parsley
  • Lemon wedges
  • Crispy fries on the side

Accompaniment Drink:

Mint tea, Ayran (yogurt drink), or a cold soda

Method of Preparation

Prepare the Meat Filling:
In a large bowl, combine minced meat, onion, garlic, tomato, bell pepper, parsley, and all the spices. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Stuff the Bread:
Carefully slice the pita bread horizontally to create a pocket without cutting all the way through. Fill the pocket generously with the meat mixture, then seal the edges lightly with your fingers or a fork.

Cook the Hawawshi:
Preheat a skillet or grill pan over medium heat and brush with olive oil. Cook each stuffed pita for 6–8 minutes on each side, pressing lightly to ensure even cooking, until the bread is golden and crispy and the meat is cooked through.

Serving and Garnishment

Place the hawawshi on a serving plate and garnish with fresh parsley, sliced tomatoes, and a wedge of lemon for added flavor. Cut each pita into halves or quarters to serve easily.Serve with crispy fries on the side. The combination of crispy bread and savory filling makes it irresistible and perfect for sharing with family or friends.

Accompaniment Drink

Hawawshi pairs wonderfully with traditional mint tea, the refreshing yogurt-based Ayran, or a cold fizzy soda for a modern twist. The drink helps balance the richness of the meat and enhances the overall dining experience.
