A Direct Luanda–Nairobi Flight Means Seamless Travel, Stronger Ties, And Fresh Markets For Both Nations

In a landmark move set to strengthen economic and cultural ties between Kenya and Angola, TAAG Angola Airlines has officially launched its inaugural direct flight from Luanda to Nairobi. The new service, celebrated on Monday at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), is expected to enhance trade and tourism while opening Kenya to broader opportunities in the Southern Africa market.

The airline will operate three flights weekly between the two cities, a development welcomed with enthusiasm by key tourism and aviation stakeholders, including the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB).

The inaugural TAAG Angola Airlines direct flight from Luanda to Nairobi receives a water salute upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday.

“All eyes are on the African market,” said Allan Njoroge, Acting CEO of KTB. “Africa accounted for about 41% of Kenya’s total tourist arrivals in 2024, with 975,883 visitors, and we see immense potential in new entrants like Angola. This flight is a huge milestone and an opportunity to grow our tourism numbers from Southern Africa.”

Kenya has in recent years stepped up efforts to diversify its tourism markets and improve intra-African connectivity. Initiatives such as visa-free travel for African nationals and investments in aviation infrastructure have made it easier than ever for travellers to experience Kenya’s breathtaking landscapes, world-famous wildlife, and rich cultural heritage.

“The TAAG Angola Airlines direct flight is a testament to strengthening bilateral relations,” Njoroge added. “It facilitates easier travel while unlocking opportunities for cultural exchange, business, and tourism growth.”

Kenya’s status as an aviation hub continues to grow, a point echoed by Kenya Association of Travel Agents CEO, Nicanor Sabula: “We are excited to welcome this new connection. It enhances our reach across the continent and demonstrates Nairobi’s growing influence as a key regional hub.”

Visitor arrivals from Angola have already surged by over 300% in the past four years, and this direct flight is expected to accelerate that growth further. With easier access, more Angolan travellers are expected to explore Kenya’s iconic safari circuits, vibrant coastal escapes, and bustling urban centres, while Kenyans gain greater access to Angola’s rich culture and expanding economy.

Kenya’s Ambassador to Angola, Joyce M’Maitsi, urged both nations to seize the moment: “These flights will operate thrice a week. Let us take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen trade, tourism, and friendship between our people. A special welcome to all Angolans, come experience Magical Kenya.”

As KTB continues to call for greater collaboration among African tourism stakeholders, this milestone underscores a larger vision: to unlock Africa’s vast tourism potential by connecting the continent from within.
