Our story begins a long time ago
Kendwa Rocks started off in 1996 as campsite and bandas, palm leaf huts. Most people came with their own tents on a boat from Nungwi village… There was no road, no electricity, no running water. Lanterns for light, car battery for music, ice brought from Nungwi to fill the cool boxes with cold drinks… Water was brought from Nungwi in containers and carried across our vast sandy beach to fill the drums in the kitchen and bath. The central space of the hotel was used as a football ground by the villagers every evening.
By 2000 KR had 10 bandas and 6 small bungalows that were named after the Southern African countries: Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. We had lights and fans running on generator and water running from the tank, filled either from the unreliable pipeline on the main road, or by water trucks.
At times we were hosting up to 60 persons with these facilities. Kendwa Rocks was steadily growing and the Kendwa Nungwi area around it. Kendwa Rocks being the first hotel on the Kendwa Beach then became the only organically grown hotel on a long stretch of beach now mostly occupied by big company-owned hotels.

Pool bungalows
The Pool Bungalows are the most luxurious option. They have a sundeck and a jacuzzi or a dipping pool and are stylishly appointed with carved wood and shades of blues. Among them are two family-sized bungalows that can accommodate large groups.

Theme Rooms
Our Theme Rooms come in four varieties in the same price range. The Historical Suites and rooms are furnished with Zanzibari antique furniture and their names and design refer to the fascinating history of the Swahili Coast.
The Coral Stone Bungalows stand-alone or in pairs, they offer an intimate escape among lush tropical gardens.
The Arabia and Africa Themed Rooms are attached to the main building. The downstairs balconies open towards the central courtyard garden with its waterfall fountain, from upstairs balconies you have views over the whole beach.
The Beach House is closest to the beach and right next to the swimming pool. It has suites on all three floors with enough space for a family or group of friends.

The Forest Rooms are our most affordable option. The rooms are situated beside the main building and the upper-floor balconies offer sea views. The rooms are decorated with an authentic, cozy feel with furniture crafted from old dhow boats.

Our kitchen specializes in Indian Ocean cuisine (Zanzibari, Indian, Arabic, Thai and Indonesian), we also have western favorites like hamburgers, fish & chips, pizza and pasta.
Our Daily Specials Menu offers a limitless array of dishes from all over the world.
Our sushi is fresh from the Indian Ocean and masterfully prepared by specialized chefs. As Zanzibar is a spice island, we present in our food the full scope of flavors, but haven’t forgotten those with milder tastes. Vegetarian options are numerous.

Zanzibar Water Sports is a highly professional and experienced operator for fishing and diving in Zanzibar, based at Kendwa Rocks Hotel. From diving alongside a pod of dolphins to snorkeling on a colorful coral reef and sipping cocktails while sailing on a traditional dhow, there is something for everyone. Take a breath and enjoy the present moment. The rocks spa is a unique escape with a beautiful atmosphere, quiet and wild with a natural, elegant African touch.
The Spa offers a variety of relaxing massages, facial treatments, hot stones m assages, and a beauty corner where you can treat yourself to a pedicure, manicure, fruity scrub, or a gentle wax.
