A Beacon Of Hope – Comprehensive Medical And Psychological Care For GBV Survivors
The fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Kenya has taken a monumental leap forward with the launch of a state-of-the-art medical centre dedicated to survivors. The Kenya Women and Children’s Wellness Centre (KWCWC) has unveiled a world-class facility, made possible by the visionary leadership of Mrs. Deloris Jordan, the mother of basketball legend Michael Jordan and founder of the James R. Jordan Foundation International. This facility, built with an investment of over Ksh. 1.3 billion, is now the largest of its kind in Kenya, offering survivors a safe space for comprehensive medical and psychological care.
The medical centre features over 33 consultation rooms and laboratories, offering essential services such as antenatal care, immunization, family planning, emergency services, obstetrics-gynecology, minor surgical procedures, and laboratory diagnostics. It is designed to provide end-to-end care for survivors and their dependents, ensuring they receive the medical attention they need in a dignified and supportive environment.
Beyond medical care, the facility also serves as one of Kenya’s largest rescue shelters, with the capacity to house over 90 individuals and 20 families at a time. This is a game-changer in GBV recovery, as many survivors hesitate to leave abusive situations due to the fear of abandoning their children. By offering family accommodation, the centre ensures that survivors can seek safety and rebuild their lives without leaving their dependents behind.
Understanding that recovery extends beyond physical healing, the centre goes a step further by providing legal services, vocational training, financial literacy programs, reproductive health education, mental health support, and leadership training. These services empower survivors to regain control of their lives, achieve independence, and break free from the cycle of abuse.
Mrs. Jordan, who has worked closely with Kenyan leadership since the Kibaki era, emphasized the importance of collective action in the fight against GBV. “This Centre is for the people of Kenya. But ask yourself, what are you going to do to support the fight against GBV? It’s not only about women; we need men too. KWCWC is about family,” she said.
This landmark initiative marks a turning point in Kenya’s efforts to combat GBV. It stands not just as a medical facility, but as a symbol of hope, resilience, and a commitment to ending gender-based violence. Survivors now have a place where they can heal, rebuild, and find the strength to move forward. The fight against GBV requires the involvement of everyone, and this centre is a powerful reminder that change is possible when people come together for a cause.
Join the Movement. Support the Cause. End GBV.
