Before you plan your next coastal escape, keep your eyes on Lamu. Kenya’s oldest living Swahili town is embarking on an exciting new chapter after the County Government of Lamu and the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) announced a strategic partnership to transform the county into the country’s premier “Island of Festivals.” The ambitious collaboration is set to elevate Lamu’s global profile by showcasing its rich Swahili heritage, vibrant cultural festivals, maritime traditions, pristine coastline, and authentic island experiences.

The joint marketing master plan will bring together coordinated efforts in destination marketing, infrastructure development, conservation, and event management to create a sustainable tourism model that celebrates Lamu’s unique identity while delivering lasting economic benefits to local communities across the archipelago. The initiative aims to position Lamu as a must-visit destination where culture, history, nature, and tourism thrive together.

Speaking during the announcement, Lamu Governor Abdalla Timamy expressed confidence that the partnership will unlock the county’s immense tourism potential while preserving its treasured heritage. He noted that Lamu is much more than a holiday destination. It is a living cultural landscape where centuries-old traditions, thriving communities, and natural ecosystems coexist. Through responsible infrastructure development and improved accessibility, tourism will continue creating meaningful opportunities for residents without compromising the county’s cultural identity.

Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei reaffirmed KTB’s commitment to promoting one of Kenya’s most distinctive tourism gems. She highlighted Lamu’s extraordinary combination of UNESCO-recognized heritage, authentic Swahili architecture, world-renowned seafood cuisine, colourful festivals, dhow sailing traditions, music, dance, and breathtaking coastal experiences as unique attractions capable of drawing both domestic and international travellers.

According to Chepkemei, packaging these experiences into a compelling destination offering will provide visitors with authentic reasons to explore Lamu while supporting conservation efforts and improving livelihoods. She emphasized that closer collaboration between KTB and county governments remains essential in diversifying Kenya’s tourism portfolio, promoting unique regional experiences, and creating sustainable economic opportunities across the country.

One of the flagship attractions under the partnership will be the highly anticipated 2026 Lamu Cultural Festival, scheduled for 26th to 28th November 2026. The iconic celebration is expected to welcome more than 20,000 local and international visitors, reinforcing Lamu’s growing reputation as East Africa’s leading cultural tourism destination. The festival will once again showcase traditional Swahili music, dance, dhow races, local cuisine, cultural performances, and centuries-old customs that have defined Lamu for generations.

Beyond destination marketing, the partnership will also focus on improving accessibility to Lamu, encouraging investments in environmentally responsible infrastructure, strengthening heritage conservation, and engaging international tourism partners to safeguard destination confidence. These initiatives aim to ensure tourism growth remains sustainable while protecting the livelihoods of communities that depend on the sector.

The collaboration further strengthens KTB’s ongoing partnerships with county governments across Kenya to enhance destination marketing, product development, trade engagement, research, skills development, and event support. By working closely with local authorities, KTB continues to unlock the unique tourism potential found in every region of the country.

As Lamu prepares for this exciting transformation, the message is clear. The island is ready to welcome the world with unforgettable festivals, timeless Swahili culture, breathtaking coastal scenery, and authentic experiences unlike anywhere else. Through this strategic partnership, Lamu is confidently charting its course toward becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated cultural and festival destinations.
