Lamu Culture

A Festival That Fuels Local Economies And Elevates Kenya’s Tourism Brand

Lamu Town is alive with colour, culture, and celebration as the 23rd edition of the Lamu Cultural Festival officially kicked off yesterday, drawing an expected 20,000 to 30,000 visitors to Kenya’s iconic heritage island. Running from 20th to 22nd November 2025, the festival enters its final day tomorrow, with thousands already immersing themselves in the heart of Swahili culture.

Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy affirmed the county’s readiness and excitement as the celebrations continue. “We are all set to host the 23rd edition of the Lamu Cultural Festival… We welcome you all to come experience the best of Swahili culture and hospitality,” he said. The overwhelming turnout so far reflects the festival’s magnetic appeal and its position as one of East Africa’s most cherished cultural gatherings.

Three Days of Culture, Colour & Community

As the festival nears its climax, visitors are enjoying an unforgettable lineup of traditional and contemporary experiences, including:

  • The iconic donkey race, a crowd favourite
  • Spectacular dhow races across three categories
  • Fishing competitions showcasing local skill
  • Beach football matches energising the shores
  • Performances by local artistes celebrating Swahili storytelling and rhythm
  • A vibrant street bazaar filled with authentic Swahili dishes and crafts
  • A lively school parade designed to inspire cultural pride among the younger generation

The grand finale is set for tomorrow evening, where the festival will close with a music extravaganza featuring top talents from Lamu and across the region.

A Cultural Showcase Boosting Tourism Growth

The strong visitor numbers reaffirm the Lamu Cultural Festival as one of the region’s largest and most influential cultural events. Acting CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), Allan Njoroge, emphasized the festival’s critical role in Kenya’s tourism ambitions.

“The Lamu Cultural Festival is the biggest cultural showcase we have in Kenya, attracting over 20,000 visitors,” he said. He noted that festivals remain a key pillar in KTB’s strategy to grow Kenya’s tourism arrivals from 2.4 million to 5.5 million in the coming years.

With Lamu recently hosting the Lamu Yoga Festival, the island continues to strengthen its enviable branding as the Island of Festivals—a destination where creativity, culture, and community converge.

A Festival Fueling Local Economies

Governor Timamy highlighted the far-reaching economic impact, noting that the festival stimulates activity across the entire tourism value chain—from transport and accommodation to food and artisanal trade.

“There are a lot of economic benefits accruing to the people of Lamu,” he said. The county has supported over 40 women groups through grants to prepare traditional Swahili cuisine during the festival, ensuring visitors experience authentic flavours while empowering local communities.

Safe, Accessible & Ready for Visitors

With three airlines flying into Lamu and improved road infrastructure, access to the island remains seamless. The governor assured all visitors of enhanced safety measures put in place with security agencies for the duration of the festival.

“Let me assure everyone that it is safe… we have made arrangements with our security agencies to ensure your safety during your stay in Lamu,” he emphasized.
