Discover Kenya’s Untamed Landscapes, Culture, And Thrills On The Equator’s Majestic Slopes
Adventure tourism in Kenya just got a major boost! The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) is transforming the Mount Kenya region into a premier adventure destination with the launch of the Magical Kenya Mountain & Trail Series, spotlighting the country’s breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and natural wonders.

The series kicked off with the Mt. Kenya Trails Edition, a four-day expedition uniting Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Tharaka, and Meru counties in a thrilling showcase of multi-sport challenges. From hiking and cycling to mountain runs, participants are set to explore terrains that range from 300m-high hills to the iconic peaks of Africa’s second-highest mountain.
Speaking at the flag-off event, KTB Acting CEO Allan Njoroge emphasized Mount Kenya’s central role in Kenya’s adventure strategy:
“Our goal is to encourage both domestic and international tourists to experience the full spectrum of the country’s mountain landscapes. This expedition demonstrates that world-class adventure tourism can thrive here, while placing conservation and community engagement at its core.”

The adventure began in Murang’a with hikers conquering the Kiambicho Hills and the Murang’a Gorges, while cyclists took on a 40km route through the Sports Complex to meet at the gorges. Local leaders, like Whitney Wanjiru from Murang’a’s tourism directorate, praised the initiative for shining a light on the county’s unique offerings.
“Murang’a may not be your typical tourist hotspot, but it is packed with adventure and cultural experiences waiting to be discovered,” she said.
On Friday, the excitement moves to Kirinyaga County, where cyclists will traverse the scenic Mwea Rice Fields to Castle Forest Lodge, while hikers explore Karuti and Kamweti Waterfalls, with a cultural stop at the legendary Daraca ya Ngai. Saturday’s challenge ramps up in Meru County, taking participants through Mt. Kenya National Park via Chogoria Gate, and exploring Nithi Falls, Mau Caves, Lake Ellis, and the 3,550m-high Mugi Hills.
KTB highlights that the Mt. Kenya trails cater to varying fitness levels, making it accessible for beginners and seasoned adventurers alike. The series culminates on Sunday at Meru University’s Marimba Campus, where elite athletes, students, and recreational runners compete in the Mount Kenya Mountain Run, turning the campus into a vibrant sports tourism venue.
Beyond adventure, the series champions environmental conservation and community involvement, featuring tree planting and cultural showcases along the route. KTB’s vision is ambitious: attracting 200,000 adventure tourists over the next five years and positioning Kenya as a global player in the $450 billion adventure tourism market.
The Mt. Kenya Trails Edition is the fourth in a six-event series in 2025, following the Barng’etuny Mountain Run, Magharibi Trails, and Aberdare Trails, with upcoming adventures in the Central Rift (November) and Elgon Trails (December).
Kenya is not just inviting visitors to climb mountains, it’s offering an adventure of a lifetime, blending nature, culture, and adrenaline into experiences that redefine tourism on the equator.
