Government Pledges Affordable Credit, Incentives, And Infrastructure Upgrades To Cement The Coast As A Premier Global Destination

Kenya’s coastal tourism sector is set for a major transformation, with the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife unveiling bold measures to attract fresh investments and reaffirm the region’s position as a world-class destination.

Speaking during the Tourism Investors’ Forum in Diani, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, highlighted the coast’s vital role in the national economy, noting that the region attracts nearly 60% of all international leisure tourists to Kenya and generates over Ksh 100 billion annually in direct and indirect earnings. She emphasized that revitalizing coastal tourism is central to strengthening Kenya’s competitiveness in the global market.

“When coastal tourism thrives, Kenya’s tourism blossoms. When it struggles, the entire sector feels the impact. Our goal is to reignite coastal tourism and secure a more competitive future,” said CS Miano.

The government’s new strategy includes expanding access to affordable credit, introducing attractive investment incentives, and streamlining regulatory procedures, all aimed at creating a more investor-friendly environment for the hospitality sector.

Tourism stakeholders at the forum lauded the government’s renewed focus on the coast. PrideInn Hotels Group Managing Director, Hasnain Noorani, pointed out that accessibility has been a long-standing challenge, despite Kenya’s coast offering experiences that rival the best in Africa.

“We are glad to see the government stepping in to unlock this challenge, with Turkish Airways beginning direct flights in October and more such arrangements in the pipeline,” said Noorani.

He also welcomed the government’s heavy investment in infrastructure, citing the Mombasa-Malindi Highway, the Dongo Kundu Bypass, and the Changamwe Interchange as key enablers that will not only ease connectivity but also boost the economy of the coastal region.

Raising the Bar on Global Competitiveness

Kenya Tourism Board Chairman, Francis Gichaba, noted that while local investors continue to play a critical role in developing the sector, the entry of big international brands would help Kenya access wider marketing networks and attract bigger capital inflows.

The Tourism Regulatory Authority is also rolling out a national classification exercise to accredit and star-rate all facilities across the country. According to Director General Norbert Talam, this initiative will standardize hospitality standards and elevate Kenya’s coastal region as a premium destination of choice.

Looking Ahead: Coast Tourism Investment Conference

The Diani forum set the stage for the highly anticipated Coast Tourism Investment Conference, scheduled for September 2025. The conference will bring together global hotel chains, international financiers, developers, domestic investors, county governments, regulators, and policymakers to explore opportunities and forge partnerships that will shape the future of coastal tourism.

With the government’s commitment, enhanced infrastructure, improved air connectivity, and rising investor interest, Kenya’s coastline is on the verge of a new golden era in tourism, one that promises more jobs, higher earnings, and a stronger global presence.
