A Look At The Inspiring Rise Of Kenya’s New Tourism Chief

Nairobi, Kenya – In a momentous announcement, confirmed via a gazette notice date March 19, 2024, the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has appointed June Teclar Chepkemei as its new Chief Executive Officer. Chepkemei succeeds John Chirchir who has been captaining KTB in an acting capacity since November 2022. She will hold the position for the next three years. With her wealth of experience and unwavering commitment, Chepkemei is poised to make a significant impact on the country’s tourism landscape.

Education Background
Chepkemei holds a master’s degree in Communications Studies, a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Communications from Moi University, and an Executive Certificate on Innovation from Stanford Centre For Professional Development. Additionally, she has a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), UK.

Career Highlights
Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest): Before her appointment at KTB, Chepkemei served as the Acting Managing Director at KenInvest. Her tenure was marked by strategic initiatives aimed at attracting investments to Kenya.
Konza Technopolis Development Authority: Chepkemei held the position of Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications at Konza Technopolis Development Authority. Her leadership contributed to the successful bid for Kenya to host the International Association of Science Conference in 2024.
Safaricom PLC: She also worked as a public relations lead at Safaricom PLC, a telecommunications giant in Kenya.
Business Journalism: June’s journey began in the media industry, as a business Journalist, making her mark on local radio stations.

In 2023, Chepkemei was named among the Top 40 Under 40 Women by Business Daily, a testament to her impact in the business and economic landscape, in addition to her commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment which has been widely acknowledged.

June brings a fresh perspective to KTB. Her journey is one of resilience, determination, and love for her homeland. Her connection to Kenya’s diverse landscapes and vibrant cultures runs deep. Her career trajectory has been nothing short of remarkable, from grassroots community projects to high-level policy discussions.

As she assumes her role, we bid a fond farewell to outgoing CEO John Chirchir, who has been the acting CEO since November 2022.
