Experience The Island Of La Digue In Seychelles With Go Places

The Island Of La Digue

The warm welcome from the tourism Seychelles representative is what we needed to start off this amazing tour to the fourth largest Island in Seychelles. La Digue is named after the vessel of an early explorer, it was first settled in 1798 by political refugees from Ile Bourbon, now called La Reunion Island, whose remains lie in the ancient island cemetery.

It is widely believed that La Digue, with its leafy meandering avenues and sleepy, island ways, is most typical of Seychelles’ special brand of tranquillity, harmony and raw, natural beauty. It ranks among Seychelles’ most visited islands, famous for its oxcarts and bicycles.

As its rich history suggests, La Digue is also famous for its many examples of fine, French-style, colonial architecture, further lending it an air of antiquity and tradition.

L’Union Estate

The visit to L’Union Estate was a fascinating one. The estate is home to the cemetery of the original settlers of La Digue and to one of the most pristine beaches in Seychelles, The legendary ‘Anse Source d’Argent, Among the most photographed beaches on earth. We saw a traditional copra mill and kiln, watched the antics of the estate’s population of giant tortoises or stroll around the majestic Plantation House framed by giant granite boulders in landscaped gardens.

Anse Source D’Argent Beach

We could not take our eyes off this stunning beach, the granite rocky outcrops, the sparkling waters and silky sand make for a great beach experience. The best way to enjoy it is to simply wander around, taking in the boulders.

Grand Anse Beach

This is yet another beautiful beach that is worth the travel. The beach is wide and stretches out to give ample space to visitors. The water is a beautiful degree of blues, small bamboo cabins where you can sit and have your privacy, and locals who sell coconuts and fruits.

Anse Severe Beach

This beach was so beautiful that we could not take our eyes off it. Anse Severe covers a long stretch of coast on the western side of La Digue. The beach is sandy and large, so while it gets crowded around the juice bars, you can always find a more secluded spot a short walk away, really great snorkelling towards the large rocks to the left, entering the water.  Lots of fish and even some live coral, great clarity and super calm waters.

Culture

The Island of La Digue has amazing street foods that both the locals and visitors enjoy. The aroma of the foods attracts crowds to taste the amazingly made dishes.

The local’s excellent creole accent and language keep you glued to them as they speak.
