Experience The Diversity Of Kenya With TEKWA

TEKWA Cultural Enterprises, A Different Kind Of Safari

We from TEKWA Cultural Enterprises would like to take you to places hitherto untouched by tourism. We would like to show you a different Kenya and bring you in touch with her beautiful people, their rich cultures and their fascinating history.

While we have already introduced you to the “Cradle of Mankind” which we visit on our 12-day tour to East Turkana, today we would like you to meet with some of the 14 ethnic groups which live in Marsabit County through which we pass.

Some of the people you will meet belong to the Nilotic language family, mainly the Samburu and the Turkana, the majority are part of the Cushitic language family with origins way back in the Near East, e.g. the Rendille, the Gabbra, the El Molo, the Dassanach, the Borana, the Somali.

Most of them live a precarious existence as semi-nomadic pastoralists roaming the vast plains and volcanic bolders with their camels, goats and sheep.

Although they live a most challenging existence they are proud, self-confident and very friendly people who like to interact with visitors. Ever so often it happens that you are taken by the hand by a Turkana, Rendille or Dassanach woman and taken into her home, mostly a temporary hut.

A visit to such a home will blow your mind and change your views: the air is fresh and cool as the hut is built to suit the hot environment, the “house” is clean and the movable possessions are neatly and logically organised and the owner is just as proud to show you around as you are of your place.

While traveling through this little developed territory, neglected since colonial times by any central government, it is not surprising that its inhabitants feel completely detached from the political realm called Kenya. Nevertheless it comes as a kind of shock when you, coming from Nairobi, are asked: “How is Kenya?” But doesn’t this question tell you more than many further explanations?

Northern Kenya is considered by many, Kenyans as well as foreigners, as high risk territory. Having travelled in this part of the country since 1992 we have not had one single incident of a negative encounter with the local people.  While cattle rustling does exist, it has become less frequent on this side of the lake and is not directed towards tourists. TEKWA is well connected all over the territory and in a position to react to a potential danger zone through hiring of two security guards.

Our tour-guide, Dr. Therese Schaerer, is looking forward to showing you around in this most beautiful, exciting and unique part of Kenya and to providing you with many more information about its people and their struggle for survival in the 21st century.
