Malindi Takes Centre Stage As Global Buyers, Storytellers, And Changemakers Redefine Sustainable Tourism Across Africa
The coastal town of Malindi, Kenya, recently pulsed with fresh energy and purpose as it hosted Essence of Africa 2025, a high-impact tourism forum redefining how the world experiences and invests in Africa. The three-day event, held at Diamonds Malindi, gathered 150 African exhibitors and 158 top international buyers from 39 countries, delivering unmatched business networking and market insight.

This year’s edition didn’t just meet expectations — it shattered them. With over 5,600 buyer-seller meetings, and 81% of buyers attending for the first time, the forum cemented its place as Africa’s most dynamic tourism marketplace.
“Essence of Africa is where the power of connection meets the purpose of storytelling,” said Jacqui Reynolds, Co-Founder of Essence of Africa. “These aren’t just travel agents — they’re global storytellers shaping how the world sees and books Africa.”
Malindi Reimagined: From Hidden Gem to Global Hotspot

Hosting the 2025 edition in Malindi proved a masterstroke. The town’s revitalized coastal charm and cultural allure won over the world’s top buyers, with Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro hailing the forum for putting Malindi back on the global travel map.
Beyond meetings and panels, delegates experienced the region’s magic firsthand — from sunset events at Temple Point Resort in Watamu to immersive Mida Creek experiences that celebrated local conservation success stories. These encounters painted a vivid picture of Kenya’s coastal tourism potential — from bush to beach.
“This forum has strategically repositioned Malindi in the global tourism conversation,” said Amanda Margison, Co-Founder of Essence of Africa. “It’s not just about safaris anymore — it’s about the full African experience.”
The Future is Regenerative: Purposeful Travel Takes Center Stage
If one word defined this year’s forum, it was “impact.”
From a rousing keynote by explorer Riaan Manser, urging the industry to “bridge the ocean between saying and doing,” to The Long Run’s powerful session on regenerative tourism, the call was clear — sustainability is no longer optional; it’s the new currency of travel.
“Regenerative tourism is about leaving destinations stronger than we found them,” said Kgomotso Ramothea of ATTA®. “Every booking can now help protect wildlife, empower communities, and preserve culture.”
Bahari Hai: Guardians of the Coast
Another standout was Bahari Hai’s coastal conservation session, led by Justin Beswick, spotlighting how Kenya’s marine ecosystems are being revived through community-led initiatives. His challenge was simple yet profound: “Tourism isn’t the threat — indifference is.”
Through responsible eco-tourism, areas like Mida Creek are now thriving, creating jobs, schools, and sustainable futures for locals.
Market Buzz: What the World Wants from Africa
Essence of Africa’s Market Buzz sessions offered a window into what’s shaping travel demand worldwide:
- Americas – Travellers crave meaning over luxury; they want authenticity, family connections, and conservation impact.
- Europe – Northern Europeans will pay more for sustainability; Eastern Europe’s rising middle class seeks new African adventures.
- Asia-Pacific – From India’s eco-conscious travellers to China’s tech-savvy groups and Australia’s off-peak explorers, diversity drives demand.
- Middle East & Africa – Regional travel is growing fast, and Middle Eastern travellers seek immersive, high-value experiences rooted in culture and connection.
Across the board, one message resonated: the world wants Africa — but with purpose, access, and authenticity.
Essence of Africa: The Marketplace of Tomorrow

With its mix of business, storytelling, and sustainability, Essence of Africa 2025 didn’t just promote tourism — it redefined it. It showcased a continent ready to compete globally, led by young innovators, local communities, and visionaries who see travel as a force for good.
As Essence of Africa 2026 prepares to make its next debut, one thing is clear: Africa’s story has never been more powerful — or more ready to be told.
