Famous Hiking Trails in Bwindi

The Ivy River Trail (13 km, 4-6 hours)

The Ivy River Trail, the oldest route through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, connects Nteko and Buhoma villages. Hikers have three options to experience this historic trail:

  1. Nkuringo to Nteko and Back (18 km): Starting from Nkuringo Lodge, hikers traverse 8 km to Nteko village, descend into the valley, and follow the Ivy River before returning to Nteko.
  2. Nteko Outpost to Ivy River and Back (10 km): This route begins at the Nteko outpost, accessible by car from Nkuringo. Hikers descend to the Ivy River and retrace their steps.
  3. Nteko to Buhoma (13 km): This comprehensive route takes hikers from Nteko through the heart of Bwindi to the Buhoma sector.

Along the Ivy River Trail, hikers are treated to stunning rural scenery, mist-shrouded valleys, and the dense rainforest, home to playful monkeys, elusive duikers, and a variety of bird and butterfly species.

The Kashasha River Trail (17 km, 6-7 hrs)

Starting from the Nkuringo Sector, the Kashasha River Trail winds through the park’s rugged borderlands. The trail features multiple vantage points showcasing mist-shrouded valleys and lush landscapes. Hikers are serenaded by the calming sounds of nature as they walk along the Kashasha River, enjoying a tranquil atmosphere.

Hikers have two options:

Loop Back to Nkuringo: Retrace the steps along the Kashasha River Trail.

Continue to Buhoma: Extend the adventure by hiking to the Buhoma sector, popular among birders and hikers traveling onward to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Suma Waterfall Trail (4 to 5 hrs)

Located near Suma village, 7 km from Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, the Suma Waterfall is a 50-meter cascade. The trail meanders through picturesque landscapes and charming villages, offering cultural immersion with locals’ warmth and hospitality. The trail culminates at the breathtaking Suma Waterfall, creating a mesmerizing mist and a unique adventure combining natural beauty with cultural encounters.
