From June 19 to 21, 2024, the Movenpick Hotel in Windhoek, Namibia, was the epicenter of the African aviation industry, hosting the highly anticipated AviaDev 2024. This premier event brought together key stakeholders from across the continent, fostering discussions that are set to shape the future of African aviation. With a compelling agenda and distinguished speakers, AviaDev 2024 underscored its significance as a pivotal platform for aviation development in Africa.

The event kicked off with a masterclass on air route development, setting a collaborative tone from the outset. The opening remarks, followed by insightful presentations on real estate opportunities within aviation, paved the way for an engaging series of sessions. Notable speakers included Nangula Uaandja, CEO of the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, and Bisey Uirab, CEO of Namibia Airports Company, who delved into Namibia’s aviation landscape and objectives, highlighting the nation’s strategic vision for the sector.

A standout moment was the macroeconomic keynote by Martin Jansen van Vuuren, an economist and tourism development advisor, who provided an in-depth analysis of global economic trends impacting the aviation industry. This session was crucial for understanding the broader market dynamics and their implications for African aviation.

One of the most compelling discussions was moderated by Hilka Birns, an aviation journalist from ch-aviation. This session featured industry leaders like Rodger Foster, CEO of Airlink, and Sanjeev Gadhia, CEO of Astral Aviation, who explored the interplay of access to aircraft finance and markets in shaping route development. Their insights were invaluable for addressing the challenges and opportunities in the sector.

The agenda also included a session on profit optimization, where experts discussed utilizing AI and cutting-edge technologies to enhance efficiency, visibility, and revenue. Moderated by Tatenda Karuwa from Simple Flying, the panel included Nick Ashton of Protect Group and Achma Asokan of AirlinePros, who shared their expertise on leveraging technology for operational excellence.

As the event progressed, the focus shifted to strategic and sustainable route development, with Marcel Langeslag from NACO leading a discussion on attracting airlines to African destinations. This session featured insights from Carlos Pimentel Araújo of SGA and Bronwen Auret of South African Tourism, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder collaboration in driving growth.

AviaDev 2024 concluded with networking sessions and one-on-one meetings, providing attendees with ample opportunities to forge valuable connections. The event’s impact was further highlighted by the Gaia evening reception, hosted by the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority and Namibia Airports Company, celebrating the collaborative spirit of the African aviation community.
