Africa’s Tourism Economy In Motion, WTTC 2026 Explores Opportunities For Growth

The Road To Tourism Growth, WTTC 2026 Spotlights Investment, Connectivity & Innovation

Nairobi took centre stage in the continental tourism conversation on Monday, 15th June 2026, as the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) convened an influential gathering of government representatives, tourism professionals, hospitality leaders, investors and business stakeholders at the Radisson Blu Hotel. The high-level forum offered a timely platform for dissecting the forces reshaping Travel & Tourism across Africa, with investment, innovation, sustainability, resilience and destination competitiveness dominating the agenda. Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving global travel market, discussions examined how Kenya and other African destinations can harness tourism more strategically, stimulate investment and build stronger links with the international travel economy.

A significant feature of the forum was the unveiling of WTTC’s 2026 Economic Impact Research, sponsored by Chase Travel, providing a statistical snapshot of tourism’s contribution to Kenya’s economy. The research reported that Travel & Tourism generated US$12.7 billion for Kenya’s economy in 2025, equivalent to 9.3% of national GDP, while supporting approximately 1.8 million jobs, or 8.3% of total employment. Beyond the headline numbers, the findings illuminate the extensive economic ecosystem surrounding tourism, with its influence filtering through accommodation, aviation, food and beverage, transport, attractions, retail, entrepreneurship, investment and community livelihoods. The figures reinforce the sector’s role as a substantial contributor to Kenya’s economic activity.

The Nairobi gathering attracted a strong line-up of industry and public-sector voices, including Hon. Najib Balala, Ms. Gloria Guevara, Mr. David Gitonga, Mr. Alex Avedi, Mr. Michael Macharia and Ms. June Chepkemei, alongside stakeholders drawn from the wider tourism and corporate landscape. Through keynote presentations, panel conversations and strategic exchanges, the dialogue moved beyond broad ambition towards the practical levers capable of converting Africa’s tourism potential into tangible economic value. Public-private partnerships, investment mobilisation, technology, destination development and regional connectivity emerged as recurring threads, reflecting an industry increasingly intent on translating opportunity into sustainable growth and measurable results.

The discussions also cast a spotlight on the infrastructure and market dynamics that will influence Africa’s tourism trajectory. Aviation connectivity, transport infrastructure, digital transformation and talent development remain important areas of consideration, even as changing traveller behaviour creates fresh possibilities for destinations willing to innovate. The growing appetite for immersive experiences, authentic cultural encounters and more responsible travel is encouraging destinations to broaden their portfolios and appeal to emerging visitor segments. Africa already possesses an extraordinary natural and cultural endowment—from iconic wildlife and dramatic landscapes to heritage, cuisine and living traditions—but unlocking its full commercial potential requires strategic investment, effective destination stewardship, innovation and closer collaboration across the tourism value chain.

WTTC’s continental figures further illuminate the scale of Travel & Tourism’s economic footprint. In 2025, the sector contributed US$228 billion to Africa’s economy, representing 7.0% of regional GDP and supporting 30.2 million jobs. WTTC projected that the contribution could rise to US$241 billion in 2026, with employment reaching 31.5 million jobs. Against this expansive backdrop, the Nairobi forum became more than a gathering of industry voices; it served as a crossroads for ideas, partnerships and forward-looking dialogue on the future of African tourism. Through photography, interviews, live reporting, editorial storytelling and multimedia coverage, Go Places Media extended the forum’s narrative beyond the conference room, bringing audiences closer to the people, insights and conversations influencing the continent’s next tourism chapter.
