The African Tourism Champion Who Bridged Borders And Inspired Dreams
Life’s fragility has never felt more profound than in these past days as I come to terms with the devastating loss of Dr. Carmen Nibigira. On November 16, 2024, we lost not only a towering figure in African tourism but also a beautiful soul who touched the lives of so many, including mine.
Carmen was more than a colleague; she was a friend, a mentor, and a sister. She had an incredible ability to inspire and unite people, whether in boardrooms, conferences, or casual conversations over coffee. Her passion for tourism was unmatched, and her belief in the potential of Africa was unshakable. I vividly recall our first collaboration in launching the EATP-Tanzania Chapter. It was Carmen who led with conviction, ensuring that stakeholders from across East Africa came together under one vision. Through her guidance, I discovered a deeper purpose in championing African tourism.
My first visit to Kigali was because of Carmen. She invited me to attend Kwitizina, an initiative she held dear, and from that moment, the dream of fostering Intra-Africa tourism took root in my heart. Together with Ikechi Uko, we began building bridges across the region, spurred on by her unwavering belief in the transformative power of tourism.
But Carmen’s impact on my life went far beyond professional collaboration. She was family. Our shared moments in Nairobi, Tanzania, and across Africa weren’t just about work; they were about connection. Her warmth filled every room, and her laughter could lift any spirit. She brought people into her world and made them feel like they belonged. Through her, I formed bonds with amazing individuals in Rwanda; Fifi Rurangwa, Mugisha Davidson, Seth Butera, and Yves Nzeyimana, who today feel like my extended family.
Just two months ago, Carmen and I were discussing a new initiative, bringing together women in tourism across East Africa. She was so full of ideas, so full of life, and so determined to leave the world better than she found it. That was Carmen, always dreaming big, always pushing boundaries, always giving her all.
Carmen’s ability to connect with people was legendary. She didn’t just mentor; she cheered you on, celebrated your wins, and stood by you in your struggles. She believed in the power of relationships, and she lived that belief every single day. Whether it was her tireless efforts to advance tourism policy or her heartfelt moments of connection with friends and family, she poured her soul into everything she did.
Her loss is a monumental one for Africa. Carmen was a distinguished tourism policy analyst, a dynamic leader, and a true Pan-African champion. She worked tirelessly to advance tourism across East Africa and the continent, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. She dreamed of a united Africa, thriving on its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, and she dedicated her life to making that dream a reality.
Today, I grieve not just the loss of a friend but the loss of a force of nature. Carmen was larger than life, her energy, her passion, her kindness. She had a way of making everyone she met feel special, valued, and seen. Her laughter, her wisdom, and her unwavering belief in the potential of our continent will forever remain with me.
Carmen, your legacy will live on in the countless lives you touched, in the dreams you inspired, and in the bridges you built. Africa mourns you, but it also celebrates you; a beacon of hope, a champion of unity, and a soul who gave so much to the world.
Rest in peace, my dear friend. You will always be cherished, and your light will never dim.
