Get Ready For A Year-Round Adventure Like No Other, From Hiking To Cultural Immersions

Kenya is inviting adventure enthusiasts to embark on an unforgettable journey with the launch of the Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series, a thrilling new initiative aimed at showcasing the country’s stunning landscapes, rich culture, and world-class adventure experiences. Targeting 200,000 adventure travelers in the next five years, this initiative is poised to transform Kenya into a premier destination for adventure and sports tourism.

Kicking off on January 12th in the beautiful Nyahururu, Laikipia County, the first event of the series, the Heritage Trails Expedition & Barngetuny Run, promises an exhilarating blend of hiking, biking, cultural immersions, and farm tours across five scenic counties, Laikipia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Baringo, and Nandi. The event will culminate with the iconic Barngetuny Run on January 18th in Nandi County, showcasing Kenya’s incredible outdoors and local heritage.

This adventure series is a critical step in diversifying Kenya’s tourism portfolio beyond its famous safaris. Felix Kosgei, the Head of Public Service, highlighted the importance of tapping into the fast-growing global adventure tourism market, which was valued at $804 billion in 2024. By emphasizing mountain and adventure tourism, Kenya is set to attract more international visitors, promote local tourism, and empower the communities involved.

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, expressed her excitement about this new chapter for Kenya’s tourism, which focuses on cultural exchange, sustainability, and economic empowerment. “This inaugural series will offer an extraordinary experience—traversing unique terrains, immersing in local cultures, and discovering Kenya’s hidden treasures,” she said. From hiking majestic mountains to biking across breathtaking landscapes, participants will have the chance to connect with the land and people in a truly meaningful way.

The series also serves as a platform to demonstrate Kenya’s renowned reputation as a sports tourism destination. Athletics Kenya President, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei, emphasized that this event not only promotes an active lifestyle but also celebrates Kenya’s natural beauty and cultural richness, aligning with the country’s broader sports tourism goals.

But the adventure doesn’t stop here. The Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series will feature other major events throughout the year, including the Nyamira Great Run Edition in May, Mt. Kenya Mountain Run Edition in June, Aberdare’s Trail Run Edition in August, Mt. Longonot Edition in November, and the Mt. Elgon Run in December. These events ensure year-round opportunities to explore Kenya’s diverse culture and breathtaking landscapes.

Through this initiative, Kenya is positioning itself as a world-class destination for adventure lovers, and with support from Athletics Kenya, the Kenya Tourism Board, and local communities, the country is set to attract travelers seeking active, immersive, and unforgettable experiences.

So, whether you’re a seasoned hiker, an avid biker, or simply someone looking to explore Kenya’s hidden gems, the Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series is your gateway to adventure, culture, and an unforgettable journey across Kenya’s most picturesque terrains.
