Giraffe Center Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The Giraffe Center in Kenya recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special event. The Giraffe Center is a beloved conservation center that is home to a number of endangered species, including the Rothschild’s giraffe. The center has become a popular tourist attraction over the years, and its 40th anniversary was a momentous occasion for all involved.

During the anniversary celebration, CS tourism, Penina Malonza, gave a speech in which he highlighted the importance of conservation efforts like those carried out at the Giraffe Center.

In addition to the CS’s speech, the event also saw the announcement of a new partnership between the Kenyan government and the Giraffe Center. This partnership aims to boost the country’s tourism sector by promoting sustainable tourism practices and highlighting the importance of conservation efforts.

The partnership will involve a number of initiatives, including the development of new tourist attractions and the promotion of eco-tourism activities. The Giraffe Center will work closely with the government to ensure that these initiatives are designed in a way that supports the conservation of Kenya’s natural environment, while also providing economic benefits for local communities.

A New Era Of Conservation: The Success Of Nasuulu Community Wildlife Conservancy

The Kenya Kwanza Administration believes in supporting community wildlife conservancies as a way of transforming the lives of our people.

CS for Tourism visited Nasuulu Community Wildlife Conservancy which was established by the Turkana, Samburu, Borana, and Somali communities as a way to not only establish peaceful co-existence but also secure a sustainable source of income for the communities.

She and the community launched the Conservancy’s Tourism Banda, which was constructed with proceeds from the NRT carbon project. The banda’s revenue will also support community development projects such as water, health, and education.

Grassroots Conservancies For The Benefits Of Local Communities

CS for Tourism interacts with grassroots conservation run by indigenous people through the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) headquartered at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya.

Present was the PS for Wildlife Silvia Museiya, CAS Hon Rehema Dida Jaldesa officials from Kenya Wildlife Service, WRTI- Kenya, and representatives from Isiolo, Samburu, and Laikipia County Governments.

NRT is a shared resource helping to build and develop community conservancies, which are best positioned to enhance local community’s lives, build peace and conserve the natural environment.

Owned by 43 community conservancies, NRT supports management of community-owned wildlife conservancies, across several counties from predominantly pastoral communities, to ensure that they benefit and their lives are improved even as they participate in conservation efforts.

The NRT carbon Project is the first and largest world grassland carbon project which is anticipated to remove and store 50 million tons of CO2 over 30 years, contributing to global carbon neutral and climate-positive targets as well as incentivizing conservation.

Through the project 14 conservancies have received $302,500 each directly in carbon revenue. Grassroots conservation and the carbon project have provided an avenue to diversify income sources for communities that heavily relied on pastoralism, and have supported development projects within the communities – a true testament to the bottom-up economic transformation.

CS commended NRT and its partners for the work they are doing despite the challenges they face. However, She urges that communities be directly involved in the processes without the introduction of middlemen, to ensure that they reap the maximum possible benefits. The Kenya Kwanza Government is doing it through the Hustler Fund, NRT can do it.

The Ministry of Tourism is willing and committed to offering necessary support towards conservation efforts as it works towards a triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit.
