New UNESCO World Heritage Site for Kenya

Located near the town of Migori in Western Kenya did the remains of this 16th century settlement become Kenya’s latest UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The stone walls, built without the use of mortar – similar to the ruins of Great Zimbabwe but not with the same finesse – served as a protective circle for livestock, food stores and people and Thimlich Ohinga is one of several such examples preserved until today.
The recognition as a UNESCO WHS is expected to give the Western Kenyan region a further boost vis a vis cultural and historical tourism.

Meanwhile was the Lake Turkana World Heritage Site, during the same session Thimlich Ohinga was declared a World Heritage Site, designated as a World Heritage Site in Danger due to the negative effects of the Gibe dam projects in Ethiopia, which have drastically reduced the inflow of water, leading to a significant reduction in water levels and a sharp rise in salinity of the water.

Hilton Garden Inn Brand Prepares For Uganda Entry

Hilton’s market entry into Uganda is now expected in either late Q1 or early Q2 of next year, when their Hilton Garden Inn brand will then unveil their logo on a purpose built new franchised hotel in the capital Kampala.

The arrival of Hilton will bring another global brand to Uganda, following in the footsteps of Marriott which has already a presence through the acquisition of Starwood Hotels / Sheraton and Protea Hotels, the latter with presently two hotels in operation and a third one being prepared for branding.

Hilton has over the past year and a half been aggressively working the East African market and the opening a few months ago of the Hilton Garden Inn Nairobi Airport – https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g294207-d12817722-r602511894-Hilton_Garden_Inn_Jomo_Kenyatta_International_Airport-Nairobi.html – and the conversion of the former Amber Hotel in Nairobi to a DoubleTree by Hilton – https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g294207-d9810215-r395746744-DoubleTree_by_Hilton_Nairobi_Hurlingham-Nairobi.html – have boosted their present in the region.

In Kigali has the Ubumwe Grand Hotel been lined up for a conversion too, and with the objecting shareholder now reportedly out of the picture is the DoubleTree by Hilton brand also soon expected to make its debut in Rwanda.
