First built during the Ming Dynasty, this five-acre complex has intriguing stone arches, sparkling fish ponds, rockeries, gardens, pagodas, pavilions and sculptures. Pass through the adjacent market bazaar and check out the souvenirs, street snacks, and beautiful traditional architecture of the surrounding Old Town.
1400 Hrs Lunch Din Tai Fung
Using the Metro Line 10 from YuYuan, head on over to Xintiandi. There’s a large area featuring many traditional mid-19th century shikumen (stone gate) houses on narrow alleys. Lunch at the famous Din Tai Fung, which is reknowed for high-quality soup dumplings, noodles, steamed buns, and many other delicious offerings. The Taiwanese chain prides itself on amazing service with a glowing reputation for consistently good quality food.
1500 Hrs Exploring Fu Xing Park
Exploring the Former French Concession (FCC) can make for a great peaceful walk after lunch. You can encounter locals practicing tai chi, dancing, and playing mah-jong in this French-styled park. Enjoy the lake, fountains, covered pavilions, and flowerbeds. The leafy streets of the FCC are filled with cosy cafés, galleries, parks, boutiques, bars, and restaurants. You can easily spend a few hours wandering here.

Continue with your journey through the Former French Concession towards the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre. It is not the easiest place to find as it is hidden in the basement of a faceless housing complex, but worth the hunt for their large collection of genuine Communist propaganda posters – some of which you can buy for as little as 200RMB. Take a piece of history back with you.
